In 2005 we made an online game in Shockwave for the University of St. Andrews, RUWPA. This was part of a competition to attract school leavers to the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics. The Game was a coproduction of the University of St. Andrews, the University of Abertay and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

The Game (the Youtube clip above shows a time condensed version) demonstrates Distance Sampling, a method to estimate whale numbers in open sea, where the habitat makes it very difficult to aquire precise estimates. To aquire these numbers is important to install effective measures to protect cetaceans and to quantify the success of any environmental policy and to monitor the quotas that many countries have imposed on themselves regarding whale fishing.
